Sheriff Dan McClelland started his employment at the sheriff's office on April 26, 1976. He was promoted to Sergeant on March of 1983, then to Lieutenant in June of 1992 and Chief Deputy in January of 2000. Sheriff McClelland has worked in all aspects of the sheriff's office from dispatch to narcotics, detective to chief.

Sheriff McClelland has lived in Geauga County all of his life. He graduated from Chardon High School and obtained an Associate of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice from Lakeland Community College. He went on to further his education by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Technical Education of Criminal Justice from the University of Akron, attended the FBI National Academy, session 167, and is a BSSA Certified Law Enforcement Manager.
