Lieutenant Scott Niehus has been a proud member of the Sheriff’s Office since 1987. Scott’s law enforcement career began shortly after he participated in his first felony arrest.  Scott witnessed a felony theft in progress and intervened, as a result four suspects were arrested and charged. After the subsequent Grand Jury presentation, Scott was approached by a Sheriff’s Lieutenant who encouraged him to apply at the Sheriff’s Office, and he did. Scott was hired and sent to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy in Columbus, Ohio for basic training.

Lt. Niehus began his career as a law enforcement deputy assigned to the patrol division. In 1990 he was assigned to the Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission, to investigate auto theft and narcotics activities occurring in Ohio. The investigation resulted in the identification and prosecution of numerous suspects and the recovery of millions of dollars worth of stolen property. Scott helped to re-establish a Detective Bureau at the Sheriff’s Office, upon his return from the task force. Scott was promoted to Sergeant in 1994 and he has served as a supervisor in all areas of the Sheriff’s Office, including law enforcement, communications, detective bureau and narcotics units.

Lieutenant Niehus is currently responsible for the management of the Law Enforcement Response Division and Detective Bureau, which includes 6 Sergeants, 25 Deputies, 4 Detectives, and a Victim Advocate.

Lt. Niehus has an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Lakeland College, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree, in Management, from Hiram College. In addition, Scott has completed the Basic and Advanced, Police Executive Development Training programs at Penn State University, and is a graduate of the 229th Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.

Lt. Niehus is  active outside of the Sheriff’s Office and is a member of the Chardon Lion's Club and enjoys coaching Lion's Club Youth Football. He is also former member of the Chardon Fire Department, and is a Nationally Registered Paramedic.

Lt. Niehus comes from a family of public safety officers, his dad, William "Bill" Niehus is the former Chief of the Chardon Police Department, his father-in-law is a retired Cleveland Fireman, his brother and two brothers-in-laws are firefighters.

Scott lives in Chardon with his wife Michele and two sons.
